Black Shouldered Kite

Black Shouldered Kite [Elanus axillaris]

Spotted this fellow (or girl) and his (or her) mate in a tree as I was slowly returning home after an abortive visit to Ash Island, which is where the protected area of Kooragang Wetlands are. There’s not much out there, its pretty soggy at the moment but I was surprised that the only birds I saw (until this) were Masked Lapwings and Black Headed Ibis, both of which are as common as mud around here.

I’ve never seen one of these birds before, although there are many different kinds of raptors on the coast… this is new to me, so I was really pleased to have captured the shot. I just adore those orange eyes!

More information about the bird can be found at Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-shouldered_kite

That’s a cute little predator. Love how you caught the eye so well, and also the graceful curve of the brow to the tip of his beak.

Thanks, Chris. Dumb luck that was. I couldn’t really see too well, which way he was looking, so I did four shots. I thought this was the best of them, Only one of the others was any good but it didnt show his beak so well. This is heavily cropped. Making me want that FZ1000 even more. Its a nice compromise between 50x and what can be cropped without too much loss of IQ. Then again… maybe the S1. The only thing that holds me back from that, really, is not being able to use its RAW files. And should I care about that? Maybe not. This was a jpg. I had the camera on iA.
